I really love treasure hunting, you know, 2nd hands shops, yard sales, the recycle pile at the dump - (found some amazing antiques in there) and just thinking. Dumpster divers (a.k.a. skippers or binners) are not bums, but typically middle class activists who reject our current capitalist system. Disgusted by the waste of materialism and hoarding of food and goods, they foraging for food, yes, but also other usable household items that have been tossed away. Our capitalist cultures creates massive waste - no argument there. Maybe the idea grosses or disgusts you, yet think about this: there is an estimated $12 billion worth of food is wasted in Canada, thrown away by the growers, processors, distributors, packagers, grocery stores and restaurants. 210 million kilograms of food is tossed each year by retailers in Toronto alone. Most of it is still fine to eat. Very telling of a society that that makes the donating of surplus food and goods illegal and the that surplus or taking of "garbage" illegal, yet hoards and with holds resources????
