The world is changing into a global community and new opportunities for creativity and innovation are presenting themselves. Our values and expectations of the education system are moving toward inclusion of wholeness and altruism. While priority has been given to labour market trends, there remains a growing need for inclusion of other modalities to ensure self esteem, life skills and quality contribution to community at large. We have seen obvious shifts away from absolute respect for authority to autonomy. Keeping up with the exponential growth of technology is a concern, yet as north Americans, we are still steeped in stress and social ills.
Canadian labour market and lifestyle trends demonstrate shifting values in lifestyle and family value priorities creating a demand for flexibility in work and individual wholeness needs. Long gone are the days of life time commitments in employer/employee loyalty and for the most part, we tend to consider ourselves and family situations first.
Lifelong learning, individual growth and economic sustainability are facts of life in a rapidly changing world. As a parent or grand parent, we have seen phenomenal changes in public education systems, yet as a society one only has to follow current events to know that we have a long way to go in order to grow healthy fulfilled and contributing adults. To answer the probing questions of how now best to instil basic knowledge in our children, in order to produce good citizens, while providing all of the other social, emotional and spiritual needs, many are turning away from public education systems and shopping for private school alternatives.
Teachers of the future, who are able to literally translate information in new and meaningful ways, may be required to begin their specialities sooner, with significant awareness of diverse cultures. Creativity and innovation is an absolute must, with versatility in cultural applications for flexibility in global marketplaces. Exponential changes in technology must be balanced with social-emotional wellbeing.
